Category is: SNATCH GAME!!!
Snatch Game is the challenge that any Drag Race fan waits for every season because it separates the top queens from the bottom. If you don’t do well in the Snatch Game, odds are you won’t get very far in the competition.
But before we talk snatch, we must talk Adore.
After a harsh critique from Michelle Visage, Adore makes the decision to leave the competition. Much like Joe Betence said on the RuPaul Drag Race Recap podcast, I can see both side of this. On one hand, Adore has gotten so far in her career by doing what she wants to do. She dresses the way she wants, she sings what she wants, and doing that has endeared her to millions of people around the world. She’s not the #1 fan favorite from Drag Race for nothing. Maybe she did realize that she didn’t need to deal with what the show was going to dish out.
As she evolved as an artist, people have said that Adore isn’t really a drag queen. She’s a musician who plays with gender and wears makeup. (Rumor has it her next album won’t be under Adore Delano but Danny Noriega.) If she really is just a performer who likes to play with gender in her own way, then it does her no good to be held to the exacting standards of a competition designed for top drag queens. She’ll continually be on the bottom for not padding or wearing a cincher, even though she’d never do those things during her performances.
But on the other hand – Adore is a seasoned reality TV veteran. Before she was on Drag Race season 6, she was on one of the later American Idol seasons and ended up making it all the way to the top 10 under her boy name, Danny Noriega. So it’s not like she doesn’t know what she’s getting into on a reality TV competition.
While I admire Adore’s desire to be true to herself, I’m irritated that she left so soon. I’m irritated that she came on the show at all, especially since she’s worked so closely with Michelle Visage in the past and knows Michelle hates everything she wears. Good for her for sticking to her guns, but damn it, think of the queens who could have taken her place on the show. Queens like Latrice Royal, Morgan McMichaels, Manila Luzon, Delta Work, or Ongina.
Yeah. It’s a bummer all around.
The Queens (in the Order of Snatch Game Introduction):
- Ginger Minj
I cannot think of anything more perfect than a drag queen impersonating Tammy Faye Baker, but Ginger’s impression fell very flat. Also, her makeup looked too good to be Tammy Faye. Ugly that shit up if you want to play a woman famous for her dedication to spider leg mascara.
I hated Ginger’s runway look last week but I love her look this week. She looks great in her gown, and she’s cinched like crazy in that corset. She looks amazing.
Alaska’s Mae West is the stuff of Snatch Game legend. It’s a clearly defined character that she commits to for the entirety of the game, and she’s FUNNY. She’s able to make dirty sexual quips for every answer and she’s even able to jump in and add to other girls jokes (like when she basically yes-and Katya’s “How many bones do I win?” with “How many bones do you want?”)
Alaska pulls out some serious high fashion for this runway show. She looks like she’s from another planet, which is exactly the character she embodies.
I’m surprised it’s taken this long for a queen to pull out a Bjork impression. Katya commits to it by doing a weird accent and basically being Katya times 20.
Katya’s runway is fine. Everyone loves it but I’m not a huge fan, probably because I can tell she’s “swimming” down the runway because her dress is so tight she can’t walk.
- Phi Phi O’Hara
SIGH. I was rooting for you, Phi Phi. And then you decided to be “honest” with Roxxxy and Alyssa. I think the producers asked Phi Phi back specifically because she was ok with being the villain on this show. Someone had to be and I think Phi Phi was the girl with the least to lose.
Her Long Island Medium is boring. One of the big problems is so few people know who the Long Island Medium is (see also: Pearl’s Big Ang impression from season 7.) I’m sure a lot of younger kids don’t know who Mae West is either, but Alaska was smart enough to pick a character that allowed her to crack a variety of jokes whereas Phi Phi had one joke where she repeated how the spirits were talking to her about 900 times. It got old real quick. It didn’t have to – Phi Phi could have chosen to get all sorts of “messages” from the spirits that could have been hilarious. She chose “it’s the spirits!” to be her one and only joke. She should have been in the bottom this episode.
Phi Phi’s runway is fine – it’s a silver bathing suit with a pair of heels. Eh. She can do better.
- Alyssa Edwards
I don’t even know what to say about Alyssa’s Joan Crawford. It’s an INSANE performance but Ru loves it, and that’s all the matters. I think when other girls have done Joan Crawford impersonations on the show they’ve never gone full on crazy, which is what I believe Ru has always wanted to see. Alyssa brought that crazy.
I love Alyssa’s runway look. She dares to break away from idea that latex is always black and brings a yellow dress with lips all over it. Not too crazy about the hair, but this really works.
I’m surprised that Detox decided to do Nancy Grace for the Snatch Game after Acid Betty failed so badly last season. Well, maybe not surprised that she chose it, just surprised that she chose it and then didn’t fucking KILL it. The only time you should do a character that’s been done poorly or killed by another queen is when you can do it better. But even though she didn’t kill this I don’t think she deserved bottom three status.
When Detox steps on to the stage for her runway you can hear Ru gasp. For good reason. Her look is amazing. This is high fashion, forward-thinking, boundary-breaking realness. It’s fierce as hell.
Oof. Tatianna’s Ariana Grande was such a misstep. She won the very first Snatch Game by portraying Britney Spears and she was hoping to recapture that with another “vacant pop star” performance. But Ariana Grande is nothing but hair and heels, which makes it hard to do a funny impersonation of her.(PS – Pandora Boxx should have won the season 2 snatch game over Tatianna. #JusticeForPandora) Another thing that made her choice so bad was that her joke choice was no longer topical. The donut thing may have been making headlines when they were filming this, but by the time it aired it’s last year’s news.
Her runway is fine but not great. It’s a dress that all the skinny goth girls I used to know back in the day would have worn to the club (just with a taller boot.) (Bigger goth girls, like myself, would have elected to wear something like Roxxxy wore.)
- Roxxxy Andrews
Phi Phi talked Roxxxy out of her original character choice for the Snatch Game (Sophia Vegara) so she decided to do….Alaska? What? Why would you want to do an impersonation of a queen who is sitting right behind you? Not only is she sitting right behind you, but she’s showing everyone what an amazing queen she is, making Roxxxy look worse by comparison. I love Roxxxy, I had her as one of my top three queens last week, but this nonsense rightly landed her in the bottom.
Roxxxy on the runway is a little boring because it is so on the nose (black latex!) Subtract the huge hair and the great makeup, and you have me on goth night in 1999. Her body looks amazing though! I love an hourglass figure.
Katya and Alaska are in the top while Detox, Tatianna, and Roxxxy are in the bottom. This is not the bottom three I would have picked. I think I would have chosen Tatianna, Roxxxy, and Phi Phi. Harking back to my conspiracy theory last week, I think the producers kept Phi Phi out of the bottom because they knew she’d be sent home if she were in the bottom again. This show feels like it needs a villain, and they’ve spent a lot of time building a narrative for Phi Phi, so she’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Which is too damn bad.
Last week I thought that Roxxxy had decided to pull everyone aside because she was trying to get more camera time, but now I think this is a producer idea and the queens have been asked to hold court with the bottom three. The girls select their lipstick, Katya changes into a jumpsuit so she can actually move during the lip sync, and Alaska elects to change her shoes into one of the ugliest pair of old lady Life Strides that I have ever seen. I love this.
Katya and Alaska give a fantastic performance, but it’s Alaska’s willingness to truly “freak” that makes her the winner of this episode. She eliminates Tatianna, which I feel is fair. I’ve heard that Alaska has gotten some people online telling her she made the wrond choice, but seriously – Someone has to go home. That’s how this game is played. And when you have such a small number of queens, all of whom are very talented, odds are you are going to have to watch a queen you love go home sooner or later.
On the way out of the workroom, Tatianna gets the same message the Coco received. I still don’t know what this means! TELL ME, SHOW. TELL ME!!
- I love that they got past queens (Jujubee, Raven) to play judges on the Snatch Game. I feel like just mentioning Shangela’s name last review conjured her appearence on this episode. She’s the Bloody Mary of drag queens.
- Raven was robbed on Season 2 and All Stars 1 (which was just a vehicle to recognize Chad Michaels’ contribution to the art of drag. Chad deserves it, but, damn it, Raven is so damned good that she should have taken that season 2 crown.) She’s my favorite queen of all time.
- Tatianna looks like she’s just painting over her stubble when she’s putting her makeup on. Whatever she’s doing works because her face is always flawless.
- Ru’s runway look is amazing as always. I wish I could meet her makeup artist (and have enough money to pay him to come do my makeup every day.)
- When Alaska selects her lipstick you can see that she’s not wearing her typical gloves with nails in them. This is weird because Alaska always says “if you’re not wearing nails, you’re not doing drag.”
