Music challenge time!
Music challenges are tough on Drag Race. They’re either a great showcase for the queens or a terrible mistake that should never be spoken of again. This one was ok. It’s hard to top last year’s Bitch Perfect music challenge.
This season the category is “HERstory of The World” where the queens are tasked with portraying some of the “baddest bitches” in history. I’m not sure I’d categorize people like Princess Diana as a “bad bitch,” but, ok. We’ll go with it.
The girls start the episode by asking Alaska why she eliminated Tatianna. She says she stuck to what they’d all determined prior to the elimination – take the judges’ critiques into account and the runway is the tie-breaker. Phi Phi seems SO HAPPY that both Alaska and Katya (who also would have eliminated Tatianna) stuck to the “agreement.” I think Phi Phi is being ridiculous, but I think this plus Phi Phi being annoyed with Alyssa’s admitted hilarious antics is set up for Phi Phi to go full villain next episode. (I’ll talk about that later.)
Queens (In the Order Ru Assigns Them Parts for the Musical)
Alaska has been assigned to play Eve. I really love that Alaska breaks out low-heeled old lady shoes whenever she’s asked to dance.
Performance Look – It’s always weird to see Alaska without her trademark giant puff-ball wig (on top of another wig), but she looks like she should look for a Britney-inspired Eve. I felt like she got a lot of screen time during this challenge, a lot more than say, Katya.
Runway Look – For what the category was (future of drag) Alaska brought it. She’s shiny and weird and her raptor scream is hilarious.
Phi Phi O’Hara
Phi Phi’s back up to her old tricks by telling people they’re terrible or being flat out annoyed by other girls during downtime. There will be no redemption for her. In fact, I think this is going to cement her reputation as a capital B bitch. Unless she really shows she’s got a heart of gold, she’s pretty much done. Ginger Minj nails it in one of her talking head moments when she says that Phi Phi came into this competition with two goals – redeem herself and stay as long as possible. Phi Phi’s version of “staying as long as possible” seems to be to provide the producers with as much drama as possible so she makes the top 4, even if she comes off as a terrible person.
If she truly wanted redemption (and I honestly don’t believe she did), it would have done her a lot of good to sit down and watch season 6 on a loop. Bianca Del Rio has an acidic tongue and a quick wit that could have come off bitchy and mean. Instead, you saw her helping other girls with their makeup and costumes. You saw her lending Adore her extra cincher so Michelle would get off her back on the runway. You saw her taking shots at herself along with everyone else. It was endearing. Phi Phi has not chosen to go this route.
That said, I do feel bad that people (and Detox!) chose to attack her so viciously on social media. You can not like what people do, you can disagree with them, but sending them death threats? That’s not ok.
Performance Look – Phi Phi’s Helen of Troy is very blonde Manilla Luzon in the “Champion” video. I love the color fade in the skirt from beige to pink.
Runway Look – This is what I was hoping to see from her. When I say she’s super
talented, this is the kind of thing I’m talking about. I do wish it had some hair or
some height on the head, but I like it.
Ginger starts out this episode by talking about how she wants to be critiqued, which is almost always a sign that the girl will be going home. I like to call this the elimination edit. This edit pops up a lot on reality shows and it’s pretty easy to spot. On Project Runway you can always tell who will get eliminated by which contestant makes a phone call home.
She can’t dance but I honestly don’t think her performance was terrible during the challenge?
Performance Outfit– It’s exactly what I would expect. Her makeup looks great & I like the cape.
Runway Look – I always love a big girl in a bathing suit. But this just did not work for me. Maybe with different hair?
Aside from the revelation that Detox bullied the shit out of Phi Phi after season 4, she doesn’t do much during this episode. She doesn’t really stand out from the other girls, and I don’t think her performance or runway was as fierce as the judges thought it was.
Performance Look – I like that Detox remained committed to her neon aesthetic by making her entire outfit neon.
Runway Look – I did not love Detox’s look as much as the judges did. The reveal was great, but the outfit underneath was just a Leeloo costume from The Fifth Element. Perhaps that was the point. Maybe to Detox the future is what we saw in that movie and her outfit is just what people wear to roll into work.
Say what you will about Alyssa, she understands exactly what she’s supposed to do in this challenge. She needs to draw focus during the performance even if she isn’t the focal point. She does it and it lands her in the top two.
Performance look – Her Annie Oakley is basically Jessie from Toy Story with bigger hair.
Runway Look – I have no idea what Alyssa is wearing but I kind of…love it? It’s what would happen if every daughter born to a member of KISS decided to form a tribute band.
Not a lot of Roxxxy this episode. I don’t think she even got a talking head cutaway this episode, did she?
Performance Look – It’s fine. She’s in the same boat as Katya in that they’re both playing modern characters and the outfits both are associated with aren’t that exciting. The dress is fine, but it’s something I’d wear to work so it’s not exciting. I’m not big on Roxxxy as a platinum blonde.
Runway Look – Roxxxy looks beautiful. But this was such a strong runway that she ends up looking a little plain by comparison. (Also – DAT ASS when she turns around.)
I think anyone who had been assigned Princess Diana would have been facing an uphill battle. She’s not the larger than life character that some of these women are (Catherine the Great fucked a horse (she didn’t really, but)). There’s not much you can do with her. The benefit everyone else has is that most of those women have been dead a long, long time. Most of us remember where they were when they heard the news Diana died. I was working the closing shift at my retail job when one of my co-workers ran up to me in tears to tell me the news. I was in high school.
Katya also has the disadvantage of having little to no choreography during her solo. She stands in the middle of the stage and doesn’t do much. I feel whoever got this role would have landed in the bottom.
Performance Look – I agree with Michelle in that it could have had so much more sleeve. But the decision to cut that train off was a good one.
Runway Look – Much like Roxxxy, Katya’s look is underwhelming. You knew she was headed straight to the bottom when Michelle said she looked like “my aunt Harriett at a bat mitzvah” while she was walking the runway.
Detox and Alyssa are in the top two and have to eliminate one of the bottom queens (Katya or Ginger Minj.) Ru is right in that it is hard to pick someone to eliminate because everyone was pretty good this week.
Alyssa and Detox lip sync and Alyssa wins. She chooses to eliminate Ginger. Had she gone off the judges’ critiques, Katya would have been going home. Katya even knows that. This is the foundation of what I believe will be Phi Phi/Alyssa drama on the next few episodes. That’s going to be painful and annoying, and I bet you anything it will only end when they’re both in the bottom two and Phi Phi gets sent home. My prediction for when that will happen = three episodes from now.
I am extremely irritated that we still don’t know what “revenge” entails. A Last Chance Kitchen kind of thing? Brackets? WHAT? TELL ME, DRAG RACE!
- Thank you for finally explaining why Alyssa’s Monsters, Inc. reads (“BEAST!” etc.) in the first episode were supposed to be funny. Supposed to be. #shade
- Obviously the girls were told to bring these costumes specifically for this challenge. Whether they knew why is unknown.
- LOL at Michelle Visage as God with a thick Jersey accent.
- OMG MICHELLE VISAGE! WHERE DID YOU GET THAT CAMEO RING? (I LOVE CAMEOS.)
- Since when have Ginger and Katya been “best friends”?
- This episode makes me want to run out and buy all the “crazy” lipsticks I can find.
- Isn’t “with great power comes great responsibility” trademarked by Marvel?
