Can I be honest with you? I hate the acting challenges. The materials the queens have to work with isn’t any good and having to sit through look queens trying to act is physically painful. But its tradition, I guess so…?
The girls are back in the workroom after Ginger Minj’s elimination and immediately we’re in the “you broke our rules!” crap from Phi Phi. I’ll talk more about Phi Phi later, but we all knew someone was going to break whatever “rules” they thought they were playing by. That’s how you play this game. And since there was no formal agreement, there’s really no rules to break. (Also – there is no way in hell that the producers don’t tell Ru who each of the girls choose before the lip sync. I’m sure they consult with Ru before she declares a winner, so it can’t really be said that Ru isn’t sending people home this season. Technically, she is.)
The girls have to pair up for the acting challenge. Do we really even need to talk about what a shit name “shequels” is?
Queens (in the order Ru assigns their movies)
Phi Phi O’Hara
Phi Phi is paired with Roxxxy for Showsquirrels, based on the movie Showgirls, a novel by Sapphire. She was originally going to play the daughter/beauty queen but she decides to switch roles with Roxxxy. This is a good move because as we see later, it’s the funnier part with a lot more to do. Phi Phi’s lucky Roxxxy was just going along to get along instead of actually paying attention to what part is objectively better.
Phi Phi does well in the challenge because she brings a lot of knowledge of the original Showgirls character to her performance. This makes Ru laugh and, like I’ve always said, if you make Ru laugh you’ll go far on Drag Race. The problem with Phi Phi is she’s continually doing and saying things that make her look like the villain of the show. I understand editing, I understand the producers are looking for a storyline – but if Phi Phi kept her mouth shut and didn’t say half of things she said, they couldn’t have edited it/taken it out of context. I’ve heard that she’s very upset that she’s getting painted as the villain of the season and she’s even said that she won’t attend the reunion. But, man, if you don’t open your damn mouth then they can’t use it to make you look like shit. I said it last review, but she really should have watched Bianca Del Rio and tried to do what she did. Maybe it wouldn’t have worked for Phi Phi because she’s a bitch in real life? But really…who cares? If you’re a bitch, OWN BEING A BITCH. Don’t complain when people realize you’re a bitch and then blame your shitty behavior on editing.
Runway Look: The look is ok. I like the shorter “first look” more than the reveal look, because I feel the reveal ends up looking a little basic. I do love the transformation, though.
Oh, Roxxxy. I really do like her but sometimes I think her head is not fully in the game because she completely missed that her original part was the funnier one with a lot more action. Predictably, she doesn’t do very well, and not because she doesn’t know how to pronounce the word “sash.”
This is a lot like what happened with Katya during the musical challenge. The material that Roxxxy ended up with was obviously designed to keep the focus on the other person in the scene. The only way anyone in this scene wouldn’t have come off as the weaker competitor would have been if the other person completely failed.
Runway Look: GORGEOUS. I would kill for a body like hers. Thick & juicy forever.
Katya and Detox are cast as the undead in Thema & Weezy. There’s not much to say about the performance besides they do well with the material, which is painfully bad. At least they commit.
Runway Look: I like the humor she brought to it, but she’s lucky she’s not in the bottom. Both looks are pretty basic.
She’s fine. She’s commits. Blah. Blah. Blah.
Runway Look: I liked the long skirt look with the high slit. But the mannerisms? Honey, no.
Alaska and Alyssa are given “Wha’ Ha’ Happened to Baby JJ?” Alaska takes the part of an old crazy lady and runs with it. This is a perfect roll for her and she nails it. Again, this is her competition to lose.
Runway Look: Holy shit, it’s Li’l Poundcake! This is so perfect for this runway and for Alaska as a whole. It’s funny, she nails the makeup, and she’s able to turn her runway into a performance that embodies the character of Li’l Poundcake.
Alyssa is in the same position as Roxxxy. Her part isn’t as strong and she doesn’t have a lot to do. I really feel her part, along with Roxxxy’s part, were written specifically so whoever got them would end up in the bottom.
She also has the misfortune of working with Alaska, who always steals the show when it comes to these kinds of challenges. She lands herself in the bottom and embarrasses all of the southern US by not knowing the words to Camptown Races.
Runway Look: Alyssa is a crazy person and that is evident in her dress. The idea was there, but the execution was not. Also, you can’t take “selfie to another level” if you aren’t taking pictures of yourself. If all those cameras came up and pointed at her to take pictures from different angles then you can say you’re reinventing the selfie.
During the critiques, Carson tells Alyssa that he doesn’t care about her diction because she’s just so great. Michelle shuts that shit down as she should because she is 100% correct. I couldn’t understand a lot of what Alyssa said and I’ve watched this episode twice.
Phi Phi and Alaska are in the top two while Roxxxy, Katya, and Alyssa are in the bottom three. Alyssa tries to push the idea that since she’s been so consistent that she shouldn’t be sent home, even though her critiques were worse than the other two queens.
Alaska wins the lip sync because she allows her character to tell a story. Li’l Poundcake doesn’t give a fuck about talent shows until another girl is close to victory. That idea inspires her performance and it overshadows Phi Phi’s sexy slinking.
Alaska sends Alyssa home and I have to admit that I was surprised when she did. However, watching the show again and taking the criteria that Alaska has said she’s used in the past into account, it makes complete sense that she picked Alyssa. She didn’t do very well in the challenge and her runway look was insane in the worst way. Katya’s runway wasn’t strong but she was good in the challenge, and Roxxxy wasn’t terrible in the challenge and she killed the runway.
The girls go back to the runway and the producers let Phi Phi run her mouth about Alyssa for a while before the mirror flickers and reveals the eliminated queens standing behind it. I hope next episode pits the eliminated girls against the remaining ones in versus type challenge. I can’t wait! (Please let Coco go home quickly.)
- Alaska was born to be a crazy old woman
- Phi Phi’s boobs in the challenge look like my boobs when I take off my bra
- Roxxxy thought sequins were called “sequence” during her season. Now she thinks “sash” is pronounced “shaw.” Alyssa thinks “Do Dah” is pronounced “do waa” and “Rigor mortis” is called “rigor morris.” So.
- My God, RuPaul is one of the most beautiful people on the planet. Her runway look is one of the best she’s ever worn.
- Big Freeda, the Queen of Bounce herself, has small speaking roles in two of the three movies. I wish she had been the guest judge.
- Tatianna looks great
